White Mice – Time Longer Than Rope
Born in 1970, in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Allan Crichton aka White Mice is a graduate of three sound systems — Sugar Minott’s Youthman Promotion, Jammy’s Hi Power, and his hometown Ticka Muzik. His brother “Courtney ‘Blemo’ Crichton” had him singing and recording from a very early age. His first break came at Sun Splash in 1985, when he and Little Kirk were called on stage to perform with Tenor Saw.
Recording at King Jammy‘s and Channel One studios, with his brother Blemo and Junior Delgado at the controls, over the next few years Mice let off a series of records amongst the very deadliest of digital reggae — nearly all on his brother Blemo‘s Intelitec imprint, out of Miami. This release collects cuts from White Mice’s early recordings at Intelitec as well as other never before reissued digital reggae classics.
The new release Time Longer Than Rope is a double album with 19 massive tracks. If were to review the entire album with track by track detail, it would probably and hour and a half to read what we have written.
Breaking The Album Down Into Components
This is a project that is very versatile with topics such as love, the struggles in the ghetto, dealing with the boss man at work, family life and, God. The sheer volume of material covered is impressive – and to be commended.
The introduction, Sweet Child talking about his love for a very special woman is a rousing, traditional piece with an emotive and moving performance to an uptempo beat which is a cross between ska and dancehall. Running from Love is another uptempo Dancehall number with a heavy dose of Trap and some nice Dub touches is seen in it. My Woman’s Love is more traditional reggae with a booming, almost Dancehall bass, grating strings, and glorious fluttering flute.
Pop-Dancehall-Roots-Dub
Ease Off and Ghetto Children are pure class, with its heavy drum and bass sound, and a glorious keyboard line. Yes Man is upbeat, light, and sometime delicate Roots Reggae with a touch of Dub – while Jah Is The Ruler is smoother, with its focus on the spirituality. I Said No continues the vibe, but with more of an edge. Then My Heart Is Gone takes Reggae to a more traditional place, with some touches of Pop.
Caribbean-Pop-Reggae Influence
We also get tasters of the other genres to have emerged from the Caribbean – or those that have been influenced by it. My Heart Is Gone is a track from White Mice – and it’s modern, Revival-influenced RnB. The Caribbean-Pop style is well-covered, across Conscious Messenger and the title track – Time Is Longer Than Rope. Love My Mommy and School Days fit well into the Caribbean-Pop Genre.
Connect With White Mice
Mr Bossmane leans into Dancehall with its dominant four-to-the-floor kick and pleasing drum buzz roll breaks. Tallawah picks up that vibe and runs with it, too.
Then, Maniac is overly Funky Soul with its swaying rhythm section, punctuated horns, and clever use of fourth-to-fifth chord progressions. Them Can’t Stop It is smooth, slightly more modern Soul.
This album is a showcase of White Mice’s versatility. Like the song say, mi little but me tallawah. He is very talented and I am very proud of him. He has a very unique style.

So, Time Longer Than Rope is a complete musical smorgasbord of Caribbean-Pop-Reggae-influenced music. As an album, it’s a wonderful representation of the Caribbean’s current people, the Caribbean diaspora, the land itself, the effects of historical and neo-colonialism, and how the Caribbean and its people can smash the shackles white supremacy and the system have tied them in.
