Veteran Reggae Artist Screwdriver Is Back In The Limelight With His New Album Prophecy
South Florida’s base reggae singer/songwriter and performing artist Screwdriver has been on a resurgence since 2009, first with his pre-inaguration song “Jah Send Him Come”, a tribute to Barack Obama, to the self produce Hip Hop style of “Don’t Turn Around”. He also did a combination with Inner Circle on their new album – State Of The World – and his single taken from it “Never Give Up”.
Now Screwdriver has extended his versatility by writing and recording a world beat album “Prophecy”. It includes Jazz and R&B Flavors on a definitive dance beat produced by Courtney ‘Blemo’ Crichton for The Crichton Clique Record Label.
Screwdriver was born Dalton Lindo on April 4, 1966 in Montego Bay, St. James Parish, Jamaica, West Indies. He was Inspired by the dancehall singers Pinchers, Pliers, Spanner Banner and Tenor Saw. He chose the name Screwdriver in honor of his musical idol Pliers.
Meeting With Beres Hammond
In the mid-80s he went to Kingston where he met Beres Hammond, who encouraged his musical aspirations. Screwdriver began his career in 1986, recording the hits ‘We Rule’, ‘Soundboy Killa’, ‘Family Counsellor’ and ‘Here I Come’.
In 1989 he topped the Jamaican chart with ‘No Mama’, which became a major hit throughout the Caribbean and inspired many DJs to mimic the chorus. The song remained on the charts for over 23 weeks. Following his success, Screwdriver toured America and Canada before settling in Florida, USA. Further hits followed, including ‘Reggae On Broadway’, ‘Learning The Ways Of Love’, ‘Roots And Culture’, ‘Teach Dem’ and ‘HIV’.
Blended R&B And Hip Hop
By 1995, influenced by the music of his domicile, he blended R&B and hip-hop with Jamaican dancehall rhythms, a sound that he demonstrated on Calling Calling for the Miami-based Ikus label. The album featured ‘She Too Young’, ‘African Woman’, ‘Got To Be Love’ and ‘Selassie Live’. His earlier hit, ‘Teach Dem’, was given a hip-hop/reggae-style remix.
Unique Style
Screwdriver‘s tranquil lifestyle may be interrupted in the new year as one of his recently released album which is beginning to trend with songs such as “Songs Of Love,” “Them A Talk,” and “No Vacancy.” Fans and supporters of the Saint James artist should not be surprised by the success of this album, as this seems to be the result whenever Screwdriver collaborates with Blemo.
Connect With Screwdriver
There are many unique things about the Reggae industry. One is the unusual monikers some artistes go by. For example, the list of artistes who make up Reggae’s “musical tool box.” There is Spanner Banner, Pinchers (Jamaican slang for a bird-beak pliers,) and Pliers. And, of course, no tool box would be complete without a Screwdriver.
“I have songs that can do well in the dance halls,” Screwdriver explained on a recent interview. “If you take a listen, you will find them all over this album. I’m very interested in keeping the Dancehall fans back home happy, and I will. I did it once, and I know I can do it again and again.”
Well, I consider myself a Dancehall singer, but mi deal wid it pon a smoother kind of level. You have Dancehall singers that flex like how mi flex, but the difference wid them is that them record their songs on the popular riddims because of the producers they work with. But my songs are more on an international level. As a result, they’re not on the popular riddims.
Screwdriver
Entertainer
With Screwdriver’s conviction and belief in his ability, plus the awesome talent of Blemo, and the backing of The Crichton Clique, it seems the message is clear, it’s now time for serious business… the “chillin’” is over.
