The Crichton Clique Presents Frankie Paul – Counter Reaction
Hailed as one of Jamaica’s biggest dancehall stars, Frankie Paul / F.P. also known as Paul Blake has been making hits for decades. Born blind in Kingston, Jamaica, he began singing at an early age. He received some vision following an operation on a hospital ship.
Dubbed the “Jamaican Stevie Wonder”, he adopted the stage name, Frankie Paul. He first came to the record-buying public’s attention in the early ’80s, when he shared the honours with Sugar Minott on a Channel One ‘Clash’ album entitled “Showdown Volume 2”. Sugar Minott was already established, while Frankie Paul was billed as ‘the up and coming superstar’, but it was not long before he became one of the most prolific singers in the history of reggae music in the 1980s and churned out hits such as “Worries in the Dance”, “Pass the Ku Shung Peng”, “Tidal Wave”, “Cassanova” and “Sarah”.
Throughout the ’80s he recorded for virtually every producer in Jamaica, and has been known to release several albums a year. Also producers from the UK and the US queued up from him, and his consistency was amazing.
Developing His Own Style
Although, at first, the Dennis Brown and Stevie Wonder influences were apparent, Frankie Paul quickly developed his own style. His voice had a power and dignity too often lacking in ’80s reggae and his interpretations of other artists’ material were masterful.
Like many other reggae artists, Frankie Paul recorded for a number of labels and producers including Joe Gibbs, King Jammy, Jack Scorpio, Prince Jazzbo, Tappa Zukie and Blacka Dread to name only six, but, through his talent, managed to avoid the ‘overkill’ syndrome suffered by so many others. He released a staggering amount of records, the majority of a consistently good quality.
Connect With Frankie Paul
Although the singer relocated to Gambia in the late ‘90s, he remains concerned about social issues back home. With exceptional skill, Frankie Paul (Paul Blake) bridged two eras in Jamaican music. While reggae was his foundation, he was the quintessential dancehall singer, developing his craft on soundsystems to the point where without effort, he could match lyrics to any backing track.
While some singers were confounded by reggae’s transition into digital production in the mid-80s, Paul stepped into the new era with authority, building a legacy that stands alongside the greats of Jamaican music. His catalog with VP Records is substantial, with over ten albums.

I don’t know where they got the idea that Dancehall Music promotes crime, Dancehall has always been about life and fun.
