Rock Your Lover With The Latest Release From The Crichton Clique – Lovers Rocking
This is the 57th year since the colony of Jamaica gained independence from British Rule.
Since 1962 – when Jamaica first gained independence – the island’s spirit, rhythm and passion for life has infected everything from the food we eat to the music we listen to. The cultural influence of this Caribbean gem is undeniable.
Today Jamaicans all over the world can celebrate the richness of their heritage in music as the Crichton Clique drops another masterpiece – “Lovers Rocking.”
West Indian Love On Display
Like a song with rising lyrics and an irresistible beat, Lovers Rocking stretches and swells, capturing the tension and release of music, love—life in general. The second installment in The Crichton Clique’s anthology of albums for Believe Digital about West Indian life. Lovers Rocking is exactly as the name suggests, a collection of Reggae Music for lovers.
It’s set in Kingston, Jamaica in the 1980’s and foregoes narrative conflicts, main characters, and thematic tidiness. Instead, it mostly moves to the music, showing the ecstasy, anxiety, and passion of a community of young, Black people rise and fall over the course of a magical life of love and happiness. This album takes you back to a time and place when there was nothing but niceness in the music.
Love Is In The Air
Most of the album takes place on the dance floor, a cosy setting transformed into a space of swaying, sweating bodies grooving to the music of reggae hits from the time period. There are characters we spend more time with than others, such as White Mice with the song “Attraction” and Tarrus Riley – It’s Better This Way – songs that strike up a tentative romance on the dance floor, but there is no structural arc to the songs aside from the temporal arc of one night.
Filled With Visuals
At times, the album sweeps you away to hips swinging, feet tapping, and finger snapping as you imagine your arms holding your dance partner in a tight embrace. One of the album’s most stunning song is “I’ll Never Walk Away” by Frankie Paul the artist’s rich tenor voice gives life to the song as you visualize a sequence of hands reaching out to pull others onto the dance floor moving to the beat of the music and brings the house alive.
Connect With Asani Ali & The Crichton Clique
There is a beautiful release in the album’s depiction of freedom on the dance floor—freedom from the worries of the world outside, from parents, bosses, the police, and, yes, society. Lovers Rocking is a fantasia of Black freedom. With this tension is released. Here we have the joy and sexual energy of the dance floor, and the promise that comes with it.
Lovers Rocking is beautiful for its totalizing atmosphere, where you feel like you can smell the sweat, touch the bodies, and feel the beat in your hips while listening. It’s especially appealing as it celebrates touch in a year where distance is the norm. But it’s also dancing on the edge of danger, like any magical moment in life. Turn one wrong corner, say one wrong word, take one wrong step, and the dance can be ruined and the magic dispelled. That’s the beauty of the beat: you have to stay in rhythm or you’re no longer making music.
Music is love and love is music. This album highlights one of the most powerful forces in the universe and we are happy to share it with the world through this album.
