What is Instagram Reels?

IG Reels is the latest video creation feature on Instagram, available in 50 countries.

This new innovation gives users the opportunity to record multiple short video clips and edit them together, set to music, to make one impactful post for up to 60 seconds in length. They are then able to share their creations to their Stories, Explore feed, and the Reels tab on their profile.

Instagram Reels have their own dedicated space in the platform, the new Explore feed, where users can discover Reels from popular and trending accounts on Instagram, giving your content the opportunity to become even more discoverable.

Getting Started

To create a new Reel, go into your Instagram stories camera and choose Reels, next to Story and Live.

From there, you’ll have the opportunity to use a variety of editing tools like Audio, Effects, Align, and Speed to create unique, seamless clips.

You can record your Reels one at a time, all at once, or by choosing uploads from your phone gallery.

Ready to get started? Press and hold the capture button to start recording, you’ll see an indicator at the top of the screen to let you know that you are recording.

When finished, you can edit the cover photo with a video thumbnail or add a cover from your camera roll. In the interest of keeping your Instagram aesthetic consistent, it is a good idea to opt for uploading an on-brand image from your camera roll for this.

Instagram Reels and Audience Development

Because the feature is such a fun and engaging way to share original (and creative!) snippets with your audience, Instagram Reels becomes a great method of building your community and growing your reach on Instagram.

You can choose to share your Reels via direct message, on your story, to the dedicated Reels tab, or in the Explore page.

When your Instagram Reels appear on the Explore page, people who don’t even follow you will be able to view your Reels, just like TikTok videos on the For You page.

This means that whether you have a large-sized audience or not, your clips can be discovered by the wider community – purely based on engagement. This is a golden opportunity to grow your audience and gain more followers.

There are several ways that you can use Instagram Reels in your marketing strategy. Engage new and existing audiences by offering creative content, such as:

  • Funny clips
  • Behind the scenes footage
  • Quick tips or tutorials
  •  Taking part in trending topics
  • Personal videos – showcase a bit of the real you
  • Interactive reels – such as “have you ever?” and “truth or dare”
  • “Viral” dances to your own music
  • User-generated content – share creations by fans that feature your music
  • The studio process, in 15 seconds

And so much more, get creative, the list could be endless!
