Winston Flags Smith<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Winston Alexander Smith (A.K.A. Flags) was born in St. James, Montego Bay, Jamaica. He grew up in the Canterbury Community and attended the Albion All Age School. He graduated in 1972.<\/p>

Upon leaving school \u201cFlags\u201d went on to live in the community of Anchovy where he started his musical career. He was the lead singer of the band Stepping Stone, put together by Calvin Clark and consisted of Zoots \u201cSkully\u201d Simms, one of Jamaica\u2019s great percussionist on drums and Eric \u201cRickabacka\u201d Frater on guitar.<\/p>

In 1974, the Stepping Stone Band merged into the Future Wind Band, led by Hugh \u201cBobo Lloyd\u201d Hall playing around Jamaica in some small community night clubs.<\/p>

In 1976 \u201cFlags\u201d family left Anchovy for the community of Flankers where he continued to work with the Future Wind Band which became the resident band for various entities, including The Disco Inferno in Rose Hall, The Great River Tours and The Negril Huts Resort.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

While grooming his musical talent, \u201cFlags\u201d opened for house name acts such as Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations, Denise Williams and the Trams to name a few. \u00a0In the summer of 1979, \u201cFlags\u201d performed on the same stage as the legendary Bob Marley at the Jamaica Reggae Sunsplash. \u201cFlags\u201d sound and style is similar to that of the legendary Bob Marley who is one of his favorite artist. During Reggae Sunsplash of 1981, \u201cFlags\u201d performed a tribute to Bob Marley.<\/p>

In 1982 he formed his own band Ambassan, which was an offshoot of the Future Wind Band and performed at Reggae Sunsplash again for two more years in 1982 and 1984. In 1984 \u201cFlags\u201d left his home in Jamaica to pursue the music scene in the United States of America. After migrating to Miami, Florida, he joined forces with the reggae band Immortals consisting of Paul \u201cI-Paul\u201d Gauntlette and junior \u201cYatta\u201d Biggs.<\/p>

A year later, he started working with producer Courtney \u201cBlemo\u201d Crichton, releasing the singles\u00a0Cool Rudie<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Natty Gone Red<\/em>\u00a0on Crichton\u2019s Intellitec label. \u00a0\u201cFlags\u201d also worked with Neville \u201cProphet Kato\u201d Thompson releasing the song\u00a0Bossman<\/em>\u00a0on the Buffalo label. A remake of Errol Dunkley\u2019s\u00a0Please Stop Your Lying<\/em>\u00a0was also released on the I-Tek label, but it was retitled\u00a0You\u2019re Gonna Need Me<\/em>.<\/p>

\u201cFlags\u201d was diagnosed with glaucoma and for years he struggled to maintain his vision. This he was not able to conquer and for the past ten years he has been visually impaired.<\/p>

While losing his vision \u201cchange mi mindset\u201d, he knew it was only a matter of time before he returned to music. \u201cIs a thing mi find dat mi love, \u2019cause it jus\u2019 come naturally. Music is a part of mi an\u2019 is not no monetary thing, is jus\u2019 a natural part of mi,\u201d he said.<\/p>

It was Crichton<\/em>, another Montego Bay-born, who encouraged Flags to resume recording and ended up producing several of his comeback songs which also include\u00a0Praise Jah<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Time Tough<\/em>. \u201cIt was great working with Blemo, wi have a good thing going. We putting the Roots back in Reggae. This is Message Music, This is music the people need to give them hope and uplift them in the struggle.\u201d<\/p>

Continuing to work with the Crichton Clique, Flags released \u201cPraise Jah\u201d on September 20, 2018, and \u201cThe World Is On Fire\u201d on July 24, 2020.<\/p>

His blindness has not stopped his recording career. \u201cFlags\u201d is in the process of completing his first album.<\/p>
